There’s been some talk of carousels being the new reels, so let’s talk about how to make them a tad more interesting
➡️ Add video elements
These are especially great on the cover page because the movement draws the attention of the scroller. Beware though: it will reduce the post’s resolution so use sparingly
➡️ Focus on the cover page
Try posing an interesting question or a controversial statement to entice people to learn more. The aim is to make it irresistible to scroll past 😎
➡️ Use emojis 🌝
Everyone loves a good emoji, they can add some pizzaz to slides that only have text on them and help convey the emotion you want your audience to feel
➡️ Don’t write essays
Adding too much body text is a waste of time - most people only skim carousel slides so there’s no point in spending tons of time on the body.

Reels are a must these days, so here are some of my tips for making the process a bit smoother!
1️⃣ Film with your back camera
The quality is so much better compared to the front-facing camera. But how will I able to see what I’m filming you ask? I gotchu, see tip no. 3 😎
2️⃣ Shoot at 4k 30 fps
Start with the highest quality for a crisp image. Although if you’re planning to edit directly in Instagram, opt for 1080/HD instead, otherwise the quality will be compressed.
3️⃣ Use your laptop to mirror your phone
With your camera open, slide down the control center, click on screen mirroring, and choose your laptop. Alternatively if ‘iPhone Mirroring’ is available in your country, you can use that, which will even allow you to control your camera from your laptop!!
4️⃣ Use a safezone overlay
When editing in 3rd party apps, make sure all of your important video elements (like text, head) are in the safe zone. Otherwise Instagram will cut them off 😬
5️⃣ Export at 1080p
Especially when you’re shooting at 4k. Instagram cannot process higher resolution than 1080p so uploading your videos at 4k may actually cause them to be worse quality than if you’d filmed in 1080p.

➡️ Version history
Anything that I ever touch should have a version history tbh.
You’ll find this by going to File > Version history
➡️ Screen recordings
Perfect if you can’t (or don’t want to) ‘hop on a quick zoom call’ 🤪 Easy screen recordings (showing face optional) right in Canva. These only work if you’re using Canva in your web browser.
You’ll find this by going to Uploads > Record Yourself. So easy!
➡️ Resize
Literally one of THE best Canva features. If you need to use your design in different aspect ratios, this is a GAME CHANGER!!!
Click on ‘Resize’ (next to File), select what you want to resize to, and then select whether you want to resize that design, or copy it to a new one!
➡️ Copy style
Another hugeeeeeee time-saver, ESPECIALLY if you use a lot of complicated effects. Rather than repeating the edits on each element, just copy the style!
Look for the paintbrush icon or use the shortcut cmd + opt + C (ctrl + alt + C on Windows)
I looooove Canva (and I’m also writing this under the influence of caffeine, hence all the caps lock hahahahaha).

Learn from my mistakes!
It can be tempting to pump out as much content as possible to please the algorithm but honestly?? 🤣 There’s no point in posting more when it’s not yielding the results that are aligned with your goals.
I do still want to reach new accounts, but not at the expense of my engagement plummeting, so it’s time to compromise!
